This season’s Premier League didn’t begin for me until about a month in since I was traveling to locations where they didn’t even show the Premier League. When I came back to the US I wasn’t all that enthused about this season (I was more focused on La Liga and seeing if Barcelona could manage a treble for the second year in a row). It was more of the same old; Arsenal hadn’t signed anyone of importance over the summer, Mourinho was being Mourinho as usual which meant the cards were stacked in favor of Chelsea, Liverpool seemed to still be the same old lackluster Liverpool, and Manchester City and United both looked to have some potential. I was actually watching the Premier League reluctantly on Saturday and Sunday mornings waiting for La Liga matches to begin. Then the articles came pouring in, Jamie Vardy’s impressive goal scoring run, Leicester City topping the Premier League, Chelsea’s dismal form, Mourinho’s sacking (that one definitely provided some entertainment). So I began paying attention. Actually I began paying attention during the Leicester City Manchester United match that was during Thanksgiving Weekend. I wanted to see if they were really all that good. Then the goal scoring began and just like that I was hooked.
Leicester City was a grace from God this year. They were truly fantastic and made the Premier League that had become so predictable and boring, to something that was fascinating to watch. How could it be that when all odds were stacked against them, when all common sense and wisdom said no way, this team managed to pull it together? I think it was the fact that they united as a team. They cared more. They simply had the heart and they believed they could win it so they won it. They had chemistry with one another because they were friends. They had the entire package and the timing was right.
Leicester City taught us all how to believe again. They taught us to never stop dreaming and to follow our hearts. They taught us that even when no one else believes in you, believe in yourself. They taught us to be patient and good things come to those who wait and work hard. They were truly a fairytale and I hope they can manage to win another Premier League title in the near future. However even if Leicester takes anther 132 years to win their next title, they proved that no matter how far fetched dreams are they can be achievable.
So thank you Leicester City for making the Premier League exciting again. Thank you for making us believe in fairytales again. Thank you for being you.
